This is largely because of the importance of such celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world. Every town or village, of whatever size, has its day (if not week) of annual celebrations. These may be associated with the local patron saint or with some historical event, such as Independence Day. On these days people may dress up in traditional clothes, take part in traditional dances and eat special dishes associated with the festival. There may be firework displays and street processions of a more or less religious nature, and, as the saying goes, a good time is generally had by all.* * *f1 festival;estar de fiesta be in a party mood;no estar para fiestas be in no mood for jokes;¡se acabó la fiesta! the party’s over!hacer fiesta have a day off* * *fiesta nf1) : party, fiesta2) : holiday, feast day* * *fiesta n2. 13 Karneval
* * *der Karnevalcarnival* * *Karneval is the time between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, which is also known as the fünfte Jahreszeit (fifth season). Among the traditional events are masked balls, and meetings where people make humorous speeches and sing carnival songs. On the so-called tolle Tage ("crazy days") normal life in many regions is turned completely upside down. During the tolle Tage power is symbolically assumed in many towns by a carnival prince and princess. This is especially so in Rheinland, where Karneval has been celebrated in its present form since 1823. Rosenmontag is generally a holiday in this region, so that people can watch the processions and join in the celebrations. In Southern Germany and Austria the carnival period is called Fasching and the processions take place on Shrove Tuesday. The festivities are centred round gigantic papier-mâché sculptures (the fallas) which are erected in public squares all over the city. They are constructed over the preceding eleven months by different local groups and normally depict caricatures of politicians and other celebrities of the year. Valencia is renowned for its fireworks, and they are much in evidence during the festival, especially during the famous “mascletá”, in which thousands of fire crackers are exploded with deafening effect. At the end of the final week of festivities prizes are awarded to the best or most original fallas and the figures are then burnt. A small figure (or “ninot”) is preserved from the winning falla, and kept in a special museum.* * *f1 GEOL fault;la falla de San Andrés the San Andreas Fault2 de fabricación flaw3:* * *falla nf1) : flaw, defect2) : (geological) fault3) : fault, failing* * *falla n (en geología) fault -
